Summary: 

This package is designed to assist clubs and coaches in rural areas where access to NCCP training is limited. Enrolling in this course will allow coaches to fast track their NCCP training to enable them to coach CanSkate and figure skating programs. Interested coaches will take the CanSkate course to earn a CanSkate In-training status, complete an in-person evaluation to gain a CanSkate Trained status and continue in the NCCP to Regional Course. Upon successful completion of all areas, new coaches will leave with a Regional Coach In-Training status. Also, included in this package coaches will also be able to attend the Music and Movement seminar.

Program Description:

Pre-Requisites:
- Candidates must be a Skate Canada registrant
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must have passed at least one complete Junior Bronze test (STAR 5)*

Description:  Want to take the first steps to become a Skate Canada Professional Coach? The CanSkate Course is the first step in Skate Canada’s NCCP and is recognized at the Instruction Beginner context by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). By completing this course, participants will earn a Club Coach: CanSkate In-Training status and will be eligible to register as a Skate Canada Professional Coach and coach the CanSkate Program. More information regarding the CanSkate Coach Training and Certification Pathway and pre-requisites please visit the Skate Canada Info Centre.

York University Residences

Located on campus and a short walk from the National Performance Centre arena, residences include a twin bed, dresser, closet, desk, and chair (double rooms contain 2 of each item). Bed linen, towels and soap are provided. All residence buildings are smoke-free environments. You will have access to laundry facilities in the residence. Rooms are not equipped with telephones.

Rates

Singles: $55.00 per night

Doubles: $47.00 per night per person (must indicate roommate when they register)

Single rates are based on single occupancy in a room. Double rates are based on double occupancy in a room. All rates INCLUDE tax (13% HST, where applicable)

A critical area for those judging and coaching pairs skating is the understanding of the biomechanics of pairs elements, including lifts, twists and death spirals. This seminar will examine common errors in pair elements, opportunities to increase the grade of execution and the progression of the elements through levels of competition.  There will be both on and off ice components in this seminar.

Program Description:

NCCP National Coach: Analyze Technical & Tactical Performance (ATTP) Course

Pre-Requisites: We highly recommend that participants taking this course have a NCCP Provincial Coach status and are preferably working with athletes or teams at the novice to senior competitive levels.

Description:  The National Coach program is designed for coaches working with Learn to Compete and Train to Compete athletes who will acquire the necessary skill set to improve athlete performance in preparation for provincial, national, and in some cases, international competitions. In a multi-skating discipline environment, the ATTP 2-day course prepares coaches to refine advanced figure skating skills and strategize plans for helping their athletes reach their full potential. At the ATTP course, coaches will analyze technical skills at the novice-senior competitive levels. Based on the following learning objectives, the ATTP course will prepare coaches to:

- Analyze technical and tactical performance by observing and defining key factors that influence competitive performance
- Analyze technical and tactical performance by applying the principles of motion to detect and correct key performance factors
- Identify strategies to monitor and evaluate technical and tactical performance
- Implement and assess the effectiveness of corrections

Program Description:

This workshop is designed to increase understanding of music and movement in a performance. Participants will be introduced to simple concepts, philosophies and exercises to increase knowledge and delivery of the performance aspect of skating. Although the primary focus of this seminar is geared for coaches, we encourage officials to attend as some of the content will help expand their understanding of music and movement as they relate to program components (performance, composition and interpretation of the music). 

Presenters:

Mark Pillay is a World and Olympic level choreographer. Although Mark’s skating career began in Saskatchewan, Mark is now based out of Vancouver Canada. Some of Mark’s choreography credits include: Pre-Novice, Novice, Junior and Senior National Champions of Canada, ISU Junior and Senior Grand Prix Finalists and Grand Prix Medalists, and Olympic Medalists (2014). Mark currently holds an Honors degree in Psychology and an Extended Minor in Contemporary Dance from Simon Fraser University. Mark is currently completing a Graduate Degree in Psychology from the University of British Columbia. 

Gordon Cobb received his BFA from Simon Fraser University, his Masters of Music from the London College of Music and a PhD in Arts Education from Simon Fraser University.  His work as a music composer and sound designer has been showcased in numerous public venues, including two Olympic Games commissions (Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010), the New York City Ballet, and on television with The Knowledge Network, and the National Film Board of Canada.  Gordon teaches music at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.  More information about Gordon’s work can be found at www.GordonCobbPhD.com
